چکیده

The use of dilution of urea or deuterium oxide ( D 2 0 ) to estimate body water in cattle, sheep and pigs is reviewed. After equilibration, which requires about 20 min after infusion of urea and 4 to 6 h after infusion of D 2 0 , urea and D , 0 space estimated from dilution in water of blood are each closely related to total body water. Calculation of body composition from total body water can vary depending upon fill of the digestive tract. Dilution of urea or D 2 0 in water of blood before equilibration is related to empty body water, but there is too much variation in predictive equations from different groups of animals to apply any one equation to independent sets of data. The use of multicompartmental models more accurately describes the dilution of D 2 0 in water from blood after infusion of labeled water, but has not significantly improved estimates of body composition in all experiments. {

The use of urea as a marker of body water in the nursing foal.

Urea, compared with deuterium oxide (D2O) as a reference, was used as a body marker to estimate body water volume in ten 2-month old nursing foals. Plasma urea clearance was regular over 10 h and the R2 of the disappearance curve was between 0.93 and 0.98. Mean urea space was about 4% lower than D2O space, but the standard deviation of the proportion of water in body weight was higher with urea...

The use of deuterium oxide space to determine the amount of body fat in pregnant Blackface ewes.

I . The use of deuterium oxide dilution to obtain an indirect estimate of body water in pregnant ewes was examined and the value of such an estimate in predicting body fat was investigated. 2. Deuterium oxide was infused intravenously into fourteen twin-bearing Blackface ewes and blood samples were taken 6-7 h later. The animals were subsequently slaughtered. 3. Deuterium oxide concentration wa...

In vivo prediction of goat kids body composition from the deuterium oxide dilution space determined by isotope-ratio mass spectrometry.

Deuterium oxide dilution space (DOS) determination is one of the most accurate methods for in vivo estimation of ruminant body composition. However, the time-consuming vacuum sublimation of blood preceding infrared spectroscopy analysis, which is traditionally used to determine deuterium oxide (DO) concentration, limits its current use. The use of isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) to deter...

Body Composition Estimatives by Anthropometry, Bioelectrical Impedance and Deuterium Oxide Dilution in Obese Adolescents

To evaluate the relationship between measures of body composition in obese adolescents by the methods of bioelectrical impedance analysis, deuterium oxide dilution and anthropometric measures, proposing an equation. The variables were weight, height, BMI, triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness, waist and arm muscle circumference, lean body mass, fat mass and total body water by bioelectrica...

A new approach for the estimation of body composition: infrared interactance.

A new method for the estimation of body composition in humans, called infrared interactance, is discussed. Infrared interactance is based on the principles of light absorption, reflection, and near-infrared spectroscopy. Body composition (percentage fat) was estimated in 53 adults (23 to 65 yr of age) by infrared interactance and compared to results from deuterium oxide dilution (r = 0.94), ski...
